Atkinson Dam was completed in 1970 and is part of the Lower Lockyer irrigation system. It is an un-gated dam, meaning that when it reaches 100 per cent capacity, water flows over the spillway and safely out of the dam.

Recreation

The lake is a popular recreation spot in SEQ, for locals and tourists alike, particularly for power boating, water skiing and jet skiing. Atkinson is also stocked with a variety of fresh water fish species to promote recreational fishing.

Permits are not required for boating or fishing at Atkinson.
